Nine year old Ellie is still grieving the loss of her mother when she is faced with another loss; she and her father must leave their Nova Scotia home and move to tiny Sable Island. Ellie is sure that such a windswept, desolate place can never be home . . . until she is befriended by a Sable Island wild stallion.
I love this book! It has history (it's set in the early 1800s), adventure, a brave, believable female protagonist, and horses; what more could you ask for? Straightforward and beautifully written, Susan Hughes' The Island Horse (Kids Can Press, Ltd., 2012) is a delight and would make a great addition to any young (I'm thinking 2nd to 5th grade), horse-loving girl's summer reading list.
I received a complimentary copy of The Island Horse to facilitate my review. No other compensation was received. For full disclosure, see the sidebar.

I read it as well, Brian, and loved it. It actually inspired me to write The Island Horse!
That's actually my comment above. I'm the author of Island Horse but didn't realize I could include my name here ...
lovely idea for a book and I like the cover a lot...when I was young I read every horse book I could find...cheers.
This sounds really cool.
I would love to give this a try. Thanks for the review!
Love horse books :)
Nova Scotia is beautiful, not sure about Sable Island though. Great book for girls who love horses. :)
